A wallet allegedly used by Jiménez Castro, a Mexican man with ties to the Sinaloa gang, was included on the US government’s list of sanctioned entities.

  • The US government added a cryptocurrency wallet to its blacklist
  • The wallet in question is linked to the drug trafficking group, Sinaloa Cartel
  • The Mexican gang “is one of the most harmful criminal organizations in the world”
  • This is not the first time that OFAC has sanctioned a wallet address

The United States government has placed another cryptocurrency wallet on its blacklist. This time, it is an address linked to the Mexican criminal organization dedicated to drug trafficking, the Sinaloa Cartel.

The Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) announced this Tuesday sanctions on ten people, including Jiménez Castro, a Mexican man with ties to the Sinaloa gang.

In a release On Tuesday, US authorities accused Castro of operating a money laundering organization that uses cryptocurrencies and electronic transfers, among other methods, “to transfer profits from illicit fentanyl sales in the United States to leaders of the Sinaloa Cartel in Mexico“.

Jiménez Castro has ordered US-based couriers to collect cash in the United States and deposit it in various virtual currency wallets to pay the Chapitos directly and reinvest them in the production of fentanyl“said the Treasury.

Cryptocurrency wallet sanctioned

According to authorities, Castro has been using a wallet Ethereum to move funds from drug trafficking activities. The wallet address “0x9c2…879fa”, allegedly used by the sanctioned individual, was included in the list of OFAC Specially Designated Nationals.

According to the data of arkham Intelligentcited by CoinDeskthe wallet in question was first activated in early 2023 and received around USD $740,000 in deposits on the exchange Binance. It currently holds just about USD $28 in ETH.

Those sanctioned today operate under the Los Chapitos faction of the Sinaloa Cartel of Mexico“said the Treasury. “Responsible for a significant portion of the illicit trafficking of fentanyl and other deadly drugs into the United States, the Sinaloa cartel is one of the most damaging transnational criminal organizations in the world“.

The news comes amid the circulation of controversial videos in which Mexican inhabitants of the Chiapas region are seen receiving the members of the Sinaloa Cartel with great fanfare. In the videos you can see how residents applaud a caravan of vehicles with armed men from the gang on board, whom the residents celebrate as “heroes”, since their arrival means the end of the siege of another criminal gang that has taken over the area.

OFAC has already imposed sanctions on cryptocurrency wallets. Earlier this year, the federal department added a group of cryptocurrency wallets linked to Russian entities to its list of sanctioned entities.

The sanctions mean that entities and individuals in the United States are prohibited from conducting transactions involving or relating to such wallets.
